Agak Laen

Synopsis

Agak Laen, which translates to “A Bit Different,” is an Indonesian horror-comedy film set to be released in 2024. It’s a unique mix of goofy humor, social commentary, and ghostly fun all put into one. Directed by Muhadkly Acho, the movie depicts the chaotic life of four friends, Bene, Boris, Oki, and Jegel, who work in a haunted house attraction at a night market. As the business approaches bankruptcy due to low attendance, the four friends brainstorm strategies to bring in new customers.

The plot twist comes when an old man dies from fright while attending the haunted house. Instead of reporting him, the friends decide to hide his body inside the attraction. Good intentions lead to unleashing a genuine ghost that starts to haunt the building. Ironically, real hauntings bring in more business than the themed house ever expected. As the crowds pour in, the four friends enjoy the fruits of their labor—until the spectral events amplify too and they’re forced to confront the consequences of their actions.

The friends attempt to reconcile their guilt over a secret they share, an angry spirit, and an ever more probing police force which results in a rabid, side-splitting, and occasionally somber subsequence of events. The film balances sharp and dark comedy on morality, friendship, fame, and infuses horror elements with great finesse.

Direction and Production

The director of the film is Muhadkly Acho, who also wrote the script under the pseudonym Agak Laen. A well-written script is one of the advantages that this movie has as it offers both speed and a constant flow of laughter. Unlike the majority of horror comedies, this film boldly stands out with its intelligent social commentary trolling for fame and silly-girl hysterical obsessions satirized in a horror backdrop.

Producers Ernest Prakasa with Dipa Andika join the project and take a delightful approach to blending the two styles as they balance the production team. Arfian adds to the horror picture by framing dimly lit shrouded light settings for the haunted house parts, while leaving space for lighthearted humor. Ryan Purwoko ensures the scenes are well paced and timed in the execution of the humor and horror in the editing.

The score in this film is achieved satisfactorily with the work by composer Ofel Obaja Setiawan. Setiawan has successfully blended together the playful tones with the scary strings and sudden shifts in the music to make both the laughter and the chills accentuated.

Themes and Symbolism

In Agak Laen, aside from the humorous and spooky antics, the viewers can appreciate deeper messages. One major theme is how people resort to taking rash actions fueled by desperation, and how attempts done toward achieving a certain goal may lead to negative outcomes, such actions may lead to much more chaotic and severe consequences upon execution.

This house serves as a passive representation of distress and guilt, something that the spirit did wrong but feels like she cannot confront the reality and the truth behind the things that happened. More often than not, spirits just do not want to accept their past in the case of “ghosting.” The commentary speaks toward the society’s insatiable appetite for something real, even when the truth is horrific.

The other important theme presented is friendship. This loyalty, trust, and camaraderie is tested to great lengths by placing the story’s protagonists through the wrongs gone right narrative that leads to everything spiraling out of control through a series of unfortunate events.
